What do you need to do if the wedding is cancelled?

WHAT TO DO IF THE WEDDING IS CANCELLED

If one, or both of you, have decided that you shouldn't marry one another but you have already announced your engagement, please don't think you've failed. Breaking an engagement or delaying a wedding is a difficult thing to do, however it is less painful to call off the wedding now than it is to file for divorce later on.

Sometimes couples decide that although they may be in love, they aren't ready for marriage. Without the stress of planning a wedding, couples are sometimes able to work through the issues in their relationship, and do get married later.

No matter how you tell everyone that the wedding is cancelled, you don't owe them an explanation of why. Wedding etiquette says it is in appropriate to tell the reasons of your broken engagement.

A "TO DO" LIST

The best way to reach the most people is to put a statement in the paper where you originally published your formal engagement. A simple statement would be something like: The engagement of Miss Jane Doe and Mr Charles Green has been broken by mutual consent."

To the people you sent wedding invitations you can make a short and to the point phone call or you can send a brief note on a note card. You can say something as simple as "Mr and Mrs Joe Doe announce that the marriage of their daughter, Jane, to Mr Charles Green will not take place.

Notifying all the booked events might be the hardest. Make sure you not only call to cancel arrangements, follow it up in writing and request a return of deposits.
You will want to notify the following people:

The preacher, priest or Rabi
The church or ceremony site
The reception hall
The photographer
The musicians
The caterer
The Florist
Flight and Room reservations for the honeymoon

You will want to return all engagement, shower and wedding gifts to family and friends with just a simple note of thanks and letting them know the wedding has been cancelled.

If you had to pay any deposits for events you need to check your contract. You might get back some of your deposit depending on how close to the wedding date the cancellation occurs.

Deciding what to do with your wedding dress can be a really hard thing to do. You don't need to make a decision right away. If you have already paid for it you can either keep it, sell it or give it away to a charity. Sometimes bridal shops will sell your gown as an in-store sample. If you haven't picked up the gown yet and has not been cut yet, you might be able to get a cancellation fee. There is also a chance of selling it as a sample if the shop has sample sales. There are consignment shops that will sell your dress and you might be able to recover some of your money. Even if you purchased wedding insurance, usually they won't cover a change of mind. Insurance usually only covers situations like a death, illness, a natural disaster or severe weather conditions.

Even tho you might be upset, mad or emotional, don't throw away your mementos, pictures and letters until you have a chance to calm down.
As for the engagement ring see our article "Should I Return the Engagement Ring if the Wedding is Called Off?"

If you are postponing the wedding because of a serious illness or death, you will need to notify everyone as soon as possible. You will want to give the reason for the postponement. A sample statement might go something like this:

Mr and Mrs John Doe regret that they are recalling the invitations to the marriage of their daughter Jane to Mr Charles Green due to the death of Mr Green's father. The wedding will be a private ceremony with the immediate family.

If you need to postpone your wedding due to a serious illness or death in one of your families, you need to notify all your guests as soon as possible. It is proper to give the reason for the postponement.

A sample of what to say could be: Mr. and Mrs. Jason Jones regret that they are recalling the invitations to the marriage of their daughter June to Mr. James Johnson due to the death of Mr. Johnson's father, Joseph Johnson. The wedding will be held privately in the presence of the immediate family. If you want to have the ceremony but not the reception you need to tell them the invitations to the reception have been recalled but the ceremony will be held as planned.
